Week(s) in Review - April 5 - April 18

Well, I didn't get a Sunday review done last week, so this one will be for the last two weeks. :)

April 5th was an acoustic show at The Mint and was a good one, from what I heard.  Christopher Hall of E! Entertainment posted a picture of Mark and Chelsie at the show, which I posted here

Also on that page is a picture Mark posted of him and the other musicians from the April 6th DWTS result show. Mark played Flamingo guitar with two other musicians while Derek and Chelsie danced a Paso Doble.  It was a wonderful performance.  I posted a video and screencaps.

On April 7th, we got a blog from Mark at Hollyscoop.  They claimed that Mark would blog every week, even though he was out of the competition, but we have yet to get a blog for week 4 of DWTS.  The blog posted on April 7th was for week 3 (even though it says week 2 in the blog). I'll be keeping a lookout for an update to Mark's blog; hopefully he updates it this week. :)

On April 8th, Mark tweeted that it was the first day off the crutches. :) Gettin' better!

On April 11th, Mark was a guest on the Reality Cares radio show.  It is an hour long show.  Mark talked about DWTS, his music, his uncle's suicide, and the AFSP. http://latalkradio.com/images/Reality-041110.mp3

ChicaGirl magazine tweeted that they were going to interview Mark at his big show on April 12th.  According to their website, the interview will be available in Issue 11.  I'll post a link when it is available to read. :)

April 12th, Mark did a Twitterview or Twinterview (call it what you want) with Wonderwall MSN.  I posted the transcript of the interview here.

Also on April 12th, Mark posted a great pic of him and his dad, that I totally forgot to post on the blog:
photo copyright Mark Ballas, 2010

The Mint show on April 12th was a sold-out, full band show.  It was treated as his album release party, red carpet and all.  The event was called "An Evening with Mark Ballas".  Check out this post for some pictures from the event.  Mark also posted a pic of the stage from one of the rehearsals for the big Mint performance, found in this post - which also contains pics of Mark's Vibe kids.  They performed on DWTS on April 13th.

Check out the Vibe dance team's performance from April 13th here.  There is also some footage of the kids rehearsing with Mark in this video (screencaps here as well).

On Friday, April 9th, E! posted an article with quotes from Mark stating that his knee needed a twitter account and then this weekend (April 16th), his knee began twittering (MBallasKnee). And then the other body parts started showing up to the party.  His shoulder is tweeting (MBLeftShoulder), as well as Cheryl's ring and various body parts belong to Derek Hough (Hair, Abs). Be sure to check them out, it's pretty hilarious. :)  Mark has been chatting with his knee and shoulder this weekend, which has been rather humorous. :)  It all started with Evan's Toe though. ;)

Mark has been posting a few pictures of his knee over the past week. I think he's getting bored not being able to dance. ;)

Mark says "Hot Wire my Heart" is the name of a new song...but right now it seems like it's "hot wire my knee"

Doing exercises to get strong again:

The knee got to wear some new jeans:

Since Derek's hair started tweeting as well, the knee and hair decided to post a picture together:
all photos of the knee copyright Mark Ballas, 2010

I think the pain killers have made Marky a little loopy. =P

Well, I think that about wraps it up for the past two weeks.  Here are some tweets that are notable from the past couple weeks. :)

Week in Review - March 29 - April 4

Happy Easter! :)  Here is the weekly roundup for the blog!

Well, it was a bit of a rough week, with Mark getting injured and Shannen and Mark getting booted off DWTS. :( Sadness.

But, Mark did start his series of shows at the Mint this week and the first show was great from what I heard. :) I haven't seen any pictures, video, or audio.  The Mint may not allow that sort of thing, so we may be out of luck if we are not in L.A. :( I really miss seeing Mark play live.  I hope he does a little 'tour' over the summer or something. That would be fun. :)

So, Monday, Mark and Shannen danced a great Jive. I really enjoyed it (and I actually hate the Jive lol). I think Shannen really performed it and yeah, she needs a little work, but it was her first Latin dance! She did great! :) Again, he scores were a little low I think...still a 6 Len? Really? :(

Also on Monday, Mark injured his knee during dress rehearsal for the show, but still performed after getting some pain killers from the hospital.  He returned to the hospital on Tuesday though and got an MRI.  His knee needs 3-6 weeks of recoup. No dancing for Mark in the near future.

And, on Tuesday, Shannen and Mark got voted off the show. :( I'm not one to believe the conspiracy theories and I really don't think the show is rigged.  When Tom Delay was injured and planned on withdrawing, they didn't just 'vote him off', they told us who the voted off person was and then also said goodbye to Tom.  Shannen just didn't get the votes.  :(  Honestly, when you figure up the judges scores with the way ABC does the votes....the scores from the judges really don't make a huge difference - it's all about the home vote.

So, no more Shannen and Mark.  Too bad, I was rather enjoying her.  But, she went out gracefully and it was a bit of fate.  Mark can't dance and her dad really needs her to be home with him since he is ailing.  God works in everything. :)

Here is the scorecard for week 2:
  1. Shannen & Mark     20 (7,6,7)     Jive     "Shake a Tail Feather"—Ray Charles
  2. Aiden & Edyta     19 (7,6,6)     Foxtrot     "I've Got You Under My Skin"—Michael BublĆ©
  3. Evan & Anna     24 (8,8,8)     Jive     "The Best Damn Thing"—Avril Lavigne
  4. Niecy & Louis     21 (7,7,7)     Foxtrot     "Love You I Do"—Jennifer Hudson
  5. Jake & Chelsie     20 (6,7,7)     Jive     "Hip to be Square"—Huey Lewis and the News
  6. Buzz & Ashly     12 (4,4,4)     Foxtrot     "Fly Me to the Moon"—Frank Sinatra
  7. Nicole & Derek     28 (10,8,10)     Jive     "SOS"—Rihanna
  8. Erin & Maksim     23 (8,7,8)     Foxtrot     "Love Story"—Taylor Swift
  9. Pamela & Damian     22 (7,7,8)     Foxtrot     "I Wanna Be Loved By You"—Marilyn Monroe
  10. Chad & Cheryl     16 (6,5,5)     Foxtrot     "100 Years"—Five for Fighting
  11. Kate & Tony     15 (5,5,5)     Jive     "I'm Still Standing"—Elton John
The only thing I was really upset about was that Nicole and Derek got 2 10s in week 2.  I love Derek and Nicole, really.  They are a joy to watch.  But, that dance was not perfect and did not deserve perfect scores.  While watching it, I actually thought, 'eh, not sure if that one is gonna do so well..maybe 8s, maybe one 9'.  But, Carrie Ann and Bruno seem to be obsessed with Nicole.  It's not fun when the judges pick a fave. :(  Also, I'm scared for Derek and Nicole, because I'd really like to see Derek win another mirrorball and I think Nicole is the partner to win with...but with such early high scores....man, they are gonna be picked apart with a fine-toothed comb. I hope they handle it well.

And honestly, how did a woman who forgot the choreography and just bounced around the stage get a higher score then a man who went out and did his best and completed the steps? At the very least, Kate and Buzz should have the same score.  But, nothing we can do about it.

So, this will be the end of my updates about performances in DWTS, unless Mark is involved (and he is next week! yay!)

Mark announced that he will be accompanying Derek and Chelsie while they dance on Tuesday's result show (April 6, 2010).  He'll be playing Flamenco guitar, which is super exciting! I can't wait to hear him play. :)  And, Derek and Chelsie are always enjoyable to watch dance. :) They dance well together too.

Don't forget Mark will perform again at The Mint on Monday night at 8:30pm (PT).  :)

Week in Review - March 22-28

Every Sunday, I'll post a little recap of the week.  I'll talk about the show the previous week and the upcoming show.  I'll also include all the links and such that I put up on Twitter but didn't put on the blog. Sometimes things just don't require a whole blog post, so I just tweet a link - but each Sunday I'll collect those links here for future reference.  I'll consider the week to be Monday through Sunday, since DWTS is on Monday. :)  So, let's get started with our first Week in Review!

In Week 1, we had 11 couples on the dance floor: 5 men and 6 women contestants.
  1. Chad & Cheryl    18 (6,6,6)    Cha-Cha-Cha    "It's Just Begun"—The Jimmy Castor Bunch
  2. Shannen & Mark    18 (6,6,6)    Viennese Waltz    "The Killing Moon"—Nouvelle Vague
  3. Erin & Maksim    21 (7,7,7)    Cha-Cha-Cha    "TiK ToK"—Ke$ha
  4. Jake & Chelsie    20 (7,6,7)    Viennese Waltz    "Kiss from a Rose"—Seal
  5. Niecy & Louis    18 (7,5,6)    Cha-Cha-Cha    "Rescue Me"—Fontella Bass
  6. Evan & Anna    23 (8,7,8)    Viennese Waltz    "I'll Be"—Edwin McCain
  7. Buzz & Ashly    14 (5,4,5)    Cha-Cha-Cha    "Cupid"—The Spinners
  8. Nicole & Derek    25 (9,7,9)    Viennese Waltz    "Hold You In My Arms"―Ray LaMontagne
  9. Aiden & Edyta    15 (5,5,5)    Cha-Cha-Cha    "Hungry Like the Wolf"—Duran Duran
  10. Kate & Tony    16 (6,5,5)    Viennese Waltz    "She's Always a Woman"—Billy Joel
  11. Pamela & Damian    21 (7,6,8)    Cha-Cha-Cha    "Gimme All Your Lovin'"—ZZ Top
I think every couple did well. My favorite couples of the evening included Shannen & Mark, Niecy & Louis, Evan & Anna, and Nicole & Derek. I didn't enjoy Chad, Pam, or Aiden much.

Shannen & Mark earned an 18 for their Viennese Waltz, which was praised for being elegant, graceful, and technically difficult.

I think Shannen should have earned all 7s for a score of 21. I really feel that she did better than Chad and Niecy, who both also earned an 18.  But, Shannen had a couple of disadvantages. She was second to dance, the first Viennese Waltz of the night, and the first female contestant to perform. Scores are always lower for the first few (unless they are insanely good dancers or something).  I'm not surprised she got all 6s, because I know these judges, but after we saw all the dances, she certainly deserved 7s, in my opinion. :)

Shannen needs to work on her extension. She was very elegant and graceful, but if she extends her whole body more and is more fluid, she will be top notch.  Her footwork was very good and she was able to handle and perform (even with a phobia of live audiences) a very difficult routine, right out of the gate. People are saying she won't last long, but I disagree. She really impressed me and I think she's a dark horse. I think she might just surprise people.  :)

And one other thing I keep meaning to say: I'm really glad Shannen decided to go sans tan. I also choose not to tan. I don't even do the fake tan. Why? It's just vanity. And real tanning really damages your skin. The atmosphere is not what it used to be, friends, so be careful in the sun. And tanning beds are not safe. For me, I've never liked tans. I'm part Native American, so I'm medium skinned when I'm not in the sun (but I get really dark if I'm in the sun), so I don't have a problem with dark skin...just dark skin that isn't naturally dark. ;)  You can tell when someone has a tan, real or fake. And it's not attractive to me. All I see is cooked meat and cancer. Sorry for the gross visual. ;) LOL All this is just to say that I'm really pleased to finally see a fair skinned woman stick to her guns and say outright "We aren't promoting skin cancer here, are we? Why do I need a spray tan?" Thanks Shannen! :)

I think Pam's scores were too high. Her Cha Cha was fine, but not any better than anyone else. And, to me, she wasn't appealing at all.  She kinda looked like a prostitute who was messed up on drugs and just got beat up by her pimp. Sorry Pam. It wasn't all Pam's fault. I mean, who decided to give her messy, ratty hair? She looked like a train-wreck. :( She deserved an 18, I think.

I loved Nicole's dance, she was very elegant - but her footwork was not so much. :( She deserved Evan's score (8,7,8), but not 9s. I think Carrie Ann and Bruno forgot to look at her feet and just stared at her pretty face. ;)

Everyone else was scored pretty decently, although, Kate got a bit of a low score. I think maybe she deserved all 6s. She was pretty graceful out there.

Next week, we will watch the Jive and the Foxtrot. Those couples that did the Cha Cha will be doing a Foxtrot and those couples that did the Viennese Waltz will do the Jive.

Mark and Shannen will have a Jive.  I spoke already about Mark's history with the Jive.  I have a good feeling about this.  I wasn't sure at first, how Shannen would handle a Jive, but after seeing her V.Waltz and watching Mark's previous Jives again - I think Shannen might actually do well with this dance.  I'm guessing her outfit will be more like Kristi's outfits, since she has tiny legs like Kristi did.  Sabrina, Shawn, and Melissa had more muscular, curvy legs and all had much fuller skirts.

On Tuesday of week 2, the Beach Boys w/John Stamos will perform, as well as a group of Haitian dancers for the Macy's Stars of Dance number (which will raise money for Haiti), and finally, the pros will dance a routine choreographed by Travis Payne (Michael Jackson's choreographer).  Sounds like a pretty good show! :)

One couple will go home. :(  Sad. It's hard to say right now, because they all still have another dance to show us, but Kate, Aiden, and Buzz are at the bottom for now.
